Good basement design separates a basic conversion from a truly spectacular new space
Basement design is key when it comes to the success of your basement conversion, from initial discussions on how to arrange the space, down to the final interior fitting.
The difference between an average basement conversion and a breathtaking one is down to good design. You know when you are in a space that has been carefully considered and designed by experts. But even skilled craftsmanship cannot transform a bad design, or make up for no design. From the architectural floor plan right down to the layout of the tiling, the success of any construction project lies with the quality of design.
BasementWorks basements have a natural architectural identity of their own, whether traditional or modern in style. By always prioritising the client's needs and the natural advantages of each house, no two basements are ever the same.
Guide to Good Design
The BasementWork’s guide to good design practice:
- Our no-scrimping, standard finished floor to ceiling height of 2.7m ensures the basement floor feels as generous and spacious as the floors above.
- All steelwork is designed to disappear wherever possible, so your basement space is not interrupted by bulges of boxed plasterwork up the walls and across the ceilings.
- We do away with the predictable rabbit-run hallways that confirm you're in a standard basement conversion. Cleverly considered basement hallways surprise with asymmetrical floor plans and frameless glass panels.
- Under floor heating throughout the basement ensures maximum flexibility for furniture layouts, and avoids the eye being drawn to an ugly radiator.
- Uncompromisingly high quality staircases, doors, architraves and ironmongery are selected for simplicity and solidity.
- Lighting and power is considered for flexibility and design – spotlights in shop fit-out runway formation are rejected for more stylish design solutions.
- Think outside the basement - particular thought is given to how alterations to existing areas such as the ground floor hallway will be detailed to work alongside the basement.
